this year’s Halloween

November 1, 2011 |  Category:   holidays nyc

Such a lovely night for trick or treating, especially after all that freakish snow. The weather was perfect and the neighborhood was lively and festive. Our friend who visited over the weekend from Southern California said that she couldn’t believe how many adults dressed up for Halloween in NY. I guess people take this holiday very seriously here! I mean look at the 2nd and 3rd photo. A neighbor who builds a haunted house in the yard of his brownstone builds these elaborate facades in front of his building every year. This year’s was the best by far. It’s cool to walk past the build out every day on our way to school, but see the finished structure on Halloween night where people line up to enter his haunted yard. And the dude that was sitting lifeless in a box in the middle of the yard dressed as Elvis or Evel Knievel – I don’t even know – jumped out and totally scared us. I mean screaming type of scared. I love this neighborhood. The free candy ain’t bad either.

It looks like EVERYONE in your street made the effort to come out – very different from our quiet, Australian Halloween!

I have never seen a street filled with adults and kids in their costume like your photo. What a fun and cool neighborhood you live in! Thank you for sharing the pictures with readers. Now I can understand why NY is chosen as one of the best Halloween cities. What are your plans for your girls’ candies now?

Halloween in Arizona is a joke compared to your Halloween. Love the simplicity of your lil’ gals costumes…adorable!

  • Jane November 2, 2011 at 7:59 pm

Yeah, in my city Halloween is just an excuse for young people to dress in skimpy costumes, get drunk and wander down the main entertainment street shouting. Not nearly as much fun as your version!

How in the world do you get your shots so clear?? What lens are you using. Your Halloween looked like a lot of fun :))

  • Jenna November 2, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. @Misha I just used the 50mm 1.2 lens, opened pretty much all the way and I only shot scenes that has some source of light, whether that was a street light or some light coming in from a home. I did consider walking around with a flash, but then thought I would look like too much of a dork.

  • Misha November 2, 2011 at 11:41 pm

Oh man, ok, I’ll have to whip out my 50mm again. I love how crisp the shots are :))

And yes, I’ve left my flash at home because it totally brings a “dork” factor to you. hahah
