daily

The school year is half over, hard to believe. Now that it’s mid-February, we’re looking forward to Spring, though maybe not as desperately as past years because of the insanely mild winter, but the extra light at the end of everyday is welcome.
At times our life can lack anything resembling stability, but we’ve settled into a daily routine that is comforting amid the instability. Mark heads to the kitchen at sunrise and I usually get up at 7:30am, just enough to eek out time to get breakfast and lunches made, the girls dressed and out the door for school. We alternate walking the kids with our neighbor kids, so some days I don’t leave the house if it isn’t my turn. On the mornings that are, the sidewalks are jam packed with families and neighbors in a pedestrian rush hour, everyone going off to their schools, their jobs or their trains. When I get back from drop off, I make the coffee.
I have 6 hours of quiet time alone in the house. If you’re a newish parent, then you can understand what a luxury that is. I confess that I rarely eat breakfast, maybe grabbing a piece of fruit. I’ll have an early lunch most likely of leftovers from dinner the previous night. Most days I’ll work on the computer 12 hours out of the 18 that I am awake. Seems like a crazy amount of time, but it’s my job.
There is flurry of homework, dinner making, clean up, bath and play before the girls head off to bed. And then when Mark turns in a few hours later, I have the house to myself again.
It’s quiet.
Then we start all over again.
