this girl is going places

When I was a little girl, my mom would sometimes tell me that she believed that I would someday be very big and successful. This was based on whatever talent in art she saw in me as a kid. Well, the jury is still out on that one, but indeed, art was pretty much my life for the first 20 years. Since then, I’ve barely picked up a pencil to draw with 20 years later, but I’ve watched both my girls draw for hours. Claudine in particular, has always exhibited a talent for drawing at an early age and her artwork at age 5 has become more and more fascinating. She’s been obsessively drawing these maze-like paths leading up the mountain to a hill-top house for months now and the mazes have gotten more complex. I know pretty much every parent thinks their kid is special, but I think this girl just might be going places someday.
ps. I love that she signs every drawing. Girl knows about intellectual property already.

This is awesome. We are all biased when it comes to our kids. But these are great! I love the signatures and they are very distinct! Ha. Awesome.
Her drawings are fantastic! She has a gift – it will be exciting to see where it takes her!
Claudine is definitely showing signs of early talent! Wow, she is only five and look at the complexity of the maze and the detail. Also, such great understanding of overlapping, depth, etc. No bias here. I’m just an art teacher who knows good work when I see it : ). Talented like her mom!
These really are remarkable for a child of 5! My daughter, who is almost 4, loves to draw too, but her signature style is so different– she’s not a detail person, but does very broad, abstract strokes. I love, love watching her development in this area.
Claudine has a real gift!
These are crazy! What a little talent! My little one (she’s 3) sometimes draws things that blow me away. I can’t wait to see the things she draws when’s 5.
*when she’s
I know what you mean about having art be your life for 20 years and then not picking up a pencil much, but using a computer/digital camera to design for work. I have actually gotten to the point that a couple times a year I illustrate with just a pencil at least half of a design project for work or freelance, it makes me happy and keeps me from getting rusty. Plus in this time of design, it is a bit of a twist.
And, I think Claudine is going places, wonderful drawings, isn’t it fun to try and imagine what traits your kids are getting from you? My husband and I talk about it a lot with our two little ones and one on the way, have a wonderful day!
I love how you describe her work and I like how it’s about a maze on a hill leading to a house. There’s something so whimsical and magical about the idea. It must be so wonderful to see parts of yourself that you can relate to in your children.
Amazing. Beautiful. I’m in awe.
I have posted before a while back and I think she is going places! It’s not just mommy pride. That art work is really impressive for a child her age. I like how there is more than one way to “solve” the maze she drew. Based on some of the other things you have shared she strikes me a gifted in more ways than one. I think every child has gifts, but they don’t always show what those gifts are so early. By the way, I have a son the same age and I of course think he’s going places too, but his stregths are just in different areas from Claudine
.
These are so great. She’s definitely going places.
I love her drawings! I remember your posts of her patterns on IG. Her work is almost mathematical (does she like numbers?) as well as being artistic. Pretty cool. My 5yo daughter is a prolific illustrator. She can sit and draw for hours on end, but she prefers to illustrate usually in one or two colors. Right now, she is more into telling a story with her rather intricate drawings of horses. She also devises intricate pulley system-like creations using jump rope and whatever else is available. I love watching what creations kids come up with. Free association and all that.
The detail of the maze seems unusual for the abilities of a 5-year old. Even more, I find the color schemes that Claudine chose for each piece appealing. The signing of each art piece is so precocious! I love how proud you are of your kids.
Amazing for a 5 year old! And beautiful! My six year old son is still drawing stick figures.
Intellectual property! Made me smile, that one.
Nope, I’m with you. Definitely going places, your Claudine.

I love how she puts her name in the picture. Smart & gifted.
Oh there’s a truckload of talent there! Colour, pattern, composition. Someone mentioned mathematical? Alas I wished my daughter would share my love for art but she is not that inclined. At least at 3.5 she isn’t. But, I am digging on the amazing stories she invents. Being creative – it’s like being able to share the best kept secret with your kid!
It’s a good post.
I still cannot draw like that even at my age. To have those ideas in the first place, Claudine is amazing! Even the different ways she signs her name and the colors, incredible!

Too pretty! I am very impressed with her talent too, especially at her age. <3 Thanks for sharing all these precious drawings, Jenna!
These are fantastic! Also love the lettering…her signature in each drawing is completely custom type
When I was 5, I use to draw houses obsessively. I would add special features, like extra wide hidden tunnels to make Santa’s trip with all my toys easier on him. My mom saved alot of these as I grew up, and a few cross-section elevations that had been published in my elementary school’s newsletter.
Anyway, I grew up to be an interior designer/architect. So I can’t help but giggle and wonder if sometimes these are just windows of what’s to come.
@Michele it could very well could be! Thought she already knows she’s going to be an artist when she grows up!
Beautiful drawings. They reveal such a vivid imagination! I think every child is already going places when there’s a parent/care giver who stands beside them and sees their potential. It’s your job to be that little bit biased. You also know your children better than anyone who might just meet her and gush over her talent in the context of a day or so (like us). You’ve watched her development, who are we to say that great potential isn’t there
(In this case though, as everyone’s agreed, it’s clearly there! )
Beautiful!
