It’s October. Which means that I am feeling the PRESSURE of the holidays and all of a sudden I’m scrambling to get our holidays stuff ready and supplies ordered (new calendar! new products!). Um, I’m a leeeetle stressed.
But on to this month’s totally material obsessions!
So last month I obsessed over boots, and really, what girl doesn’t as soon as Labor Day hits? But the reality is, September and even early October can still be really warm (it’s 80 degrees today, people!) so I call these transition months the months where I have no idea what shoes I’m supposed to wear.
I’ve decided that I don’t like the way I look in ballet flats anymore. I have no idea what changed, but it sort of makes me feel…I don’t know, frumpy or something? Or maybe they are too dainty? I do love my peep toe metallic ones from Cynthia Steffe above that I’ve had for years and I have worn them a lot in the past, but lately I don’t feel like me in them. Is that crazy? I’m wondering if a ballet flat with an ankle strap would make a difference. Or maybe to feel less frumpy I need one with a bit of a heel, like these (those are cute, right?). Because I tried oxfords similar to these (eh, still undecided) and I’m not a loafer person. Sometimes I wear sneakers and clogs, but other than that, what else is there?? What do you wear in this weather when it’s not quite cold enough for boots?
I do have to say that I have been wearing more dresses this Summer and Fall which is sort of a new thing for me. I remember at my very first NYC job, my creative director boss wearing her dresses, many of them vintage, with open toed heels and tights. It’s not a look for everyone, but I wonder if I can pull it off.
Speaking of dresses, I haven’t really been paying attention to anything Marc Jacobs has been doing lately, but 10 years ago my friends and I were a bit obsessed with his line, as I think many girls were. This dress of his caught my attention. I think that print is so interesting. Would I wear it? Maybe! I don’t know. It’s certainly the polar opposite of this simple black dress that I am obsessed with (actually that whole outfit, boots, socks and all). Too bad it’s so out of my price range. I’m finding dresses like that so hard to find.
What I can recommend this month if you have 2 little girls are these Gap Jewel box skinny jeans. Mia has them in electric teal and Claudine wanted the summer azalea. These are the first brightly colored jeans I have bought for them and the colors are fantastic and the girls look so great in them. Gap jeans don’t really fit me very well because I find that I’m in between their sizes, but I couldn’t resist trying on a pair of bright turquoise ankle legging jeans when I saw them in a store last month. They don’t have the color I bought online for some reason and I almost returned them because they were so bright, but I’ve been wearing them a lot since I decided to keep them. What helped was that the clerk at the store told me to buy a size down if I was in between sizes since they stretch out so much during the day. And he was right! I’m so glad because I can’t think of anything worse (in fashion) than wearing a pair of droopy, ill fitting jeans in the brightest color you can find. It’s like walking down the street with a sign that says, “hey, look at my saggy ass! What, you don’t want to look? But I know you’re gonna anyway because you can see my legs from 2 blocks away in this crazy color even if you didn’t want to!”
