This Madewell bag + office life

This Madewell bag + office life

August 4, 2014 |  Category:   happy purchases life

Can a bag change your life? Seems silly, but at the moment, I feel like this Madewell tote has. (by the way, this post isn’t sponsored, nor was the bag comped. Sometimes I feel like you need to clarify these things these days). ANYWAY. Some things about working in an office have changed since the last time I worked in one, which was a 6 week gig when I was 7 months pregnant with C. For one, everyone carries their laptop to the office every day where I’ve been working and I found myself lugging mine around without an appropriately sized bag to carry my computer in. I was using various cheap canvas totes everyday when I started looking for… CONTINUE READING

Haven’t done one of these posts in a while. Doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been any shopping; on the contrary, I’ll tell you that sometimes retail therapy totally works, and for a while there in the Fall when I was going through a particularly stressful schedule I was doing more of it than usual.   There are two things in particular that we’re getting a lot of use this cold winter. Up top are the North Face Kids Shellista boots. We have the boots in plain black which seem to be sold out and I bought them on sale last Fall so it was significantly cheaper at $48 (the plain ones are also $10 cheaper than the ones with the… CONTINUE READING

Sometimes it really is the little things that make a difference in your day. I bought this ceramic Iittala mug in Seattle while we were killing time waiting for a restaurant to open. One of those impulse buys (do I *really* need another coffee mug?), but I have loved reaching for this mug every morning to pour my coffee in. The cup feels substantial with a nice weight in my hands and I love the color and subtle pattern.   In my search for a winter mid-weight coat for Miss C this year, I ventured onto the MiniBoden site, a shop that I always dismissed as out of our price range. But with the Gap coat prices creeping upward every… CONTINUE READING

I know summer is over, but it’s still rather warm here in NY and despite having put away all sandals for the season, I’m finding myself pulling them out to wear still every so often. Those bright cerulean blue K. Jacques sandals above were the best find of the summer. I’ve always wanted a pair of these French sandals, but they are really pricey at $250+ a pair. I can’t bring myself to pay that much for a pair of sandals, but I wandered into a neighborhood boutique last month and found them on end-of-season clearance sale for $75. They had one pair left in my size so I just took that as a sign that they were meant for… CONTINUE READING

On our last few days out in Washington, I really thought I’d come home and suffer from post-vacation depression. I used to get it really bad years ago, pre-kids, and I sort of felt that familiar feeling build up again. It’s a feeling that is hard to explain in words, but it’s like the Sunday blues, but bigger and it makes you lethargic and want to do nothing but mope around the house and eat chocolate. It’s interesting, however, that when we finally did come home after nearly 3 weeks, it felt fine to be back (oh, and a Depeche Mode concert in Brooklyn with my friend Anna the night after we landed helped kick me back to life on… CONTINUE READING

Could you tell from the collective griping from out East that we suffered through a particularly nasty heatwave last week? I hardly spent any time outdoors while the girls were at camp except to get a mammogram done on Friday. When you’re my age, you have to get stuff like that done. It isn’t bad, usually, except for any time spent momentarily freaking out that they’ll find something, and then of course you over-analyze ever nuanced facial expression on the technician. Why did she linger on that image for so long? It just so happened that the air conditioner broke down the day of my appointment, which was as fun as going to the doctor in 99 degree heat sounds… CONTINUE READING

Forgot to share what Mark got for my birthday back in April – earrings by Stone and Honey. I had the pleasure of meeting Teresa last summer in Portland and this is my first piece from her. I love them.   Remember these Madewell sandals I posted about a few months ago? I was hoping they would be my everyday summer staple and they have become that shoe, even with that little 1.5″ wedge heel (I don’t notice the heel at all – they feel like flats, but who wouldn’t want to be 1.5″ taller?). I’ve worn them nearly every day since the weather got warm enough for sandals and they were comfortable right away out of the box –… CONTINUE READING

Kyocera knives, salt waters and a dress

Kyocera knives, salt waters and a dress

Have you ever used a ceramic knife? I think my friend Nichole was the first to tell me about the ceramic knife when I spotted it at her house. Mark and I later saw a Kyocera knife for sale at one of the stores at Chelsea Market and we decided to give it a try. They’re lightweight and super sharp, but the claim that it actually prevents cut fruit from getting brown (which supposedly happens when metal interacts with acidic juices) was the thing that sold me. I pack the girls apple slices nearly every day for lunch, and in the past those containers of cut fruit would sometimes come back untouched at the end of the day because the… CONTINUE READING

I’m not sure what possessed me to buy hot pink pants, but I did. Maybe it’s because they ended up being $20, marked down on sale and forever discounted with one of the Gap’s never ending sale codes, but it hasn’t just sat in my closet either; I’ve worn them quite a few times since they’ve arrived in the mail. See? Despite assumptions that I only wear black or gray, I do wear color (sometimes). Another color that I seem to always gravitate towards is bright green which is odd because from 5th to 8th grade my Catholic School uniform was bright green and yellow and I vowed never to wear green again. It was the ugliest color combination I… CONTINUE READING

I had a sudden urge to go shopping over the weekend which is something that doesn’t really happen often. It’s not that I don’t like to shop – I actually do, but who has the time anymore? I certainly don’t shop socially as much – you know with a friend, bopping around from store to store and stopping for lunch or coffee. Those were the days. Now, shopping is less leisurely and more utilitarian; less browsing and more focused on specific things we need. I covered a lot of ground though in about 2 hours when we all went into Manhattan on Saturday, and I bought something for everyone while Mark took the girls to the bookstore and the playground… CONTINUE READING

March, and no obsessions this month

March, and no obsessions this month

March 1, 2013 |  Category:   happy purchases life

Well, I lied a little. I’m obsessed with looking at this jar of candied kumquats because it’s so sunshiny and summery (recipe here). We like to put it on ice cream and use the syrup for teas. I think we’re all wanting Spring to get here already.   I’m also obsessed with those Vita Coco Coconut Waters (wait – they come in flavors??). We buy them in bulk from Costco and since we usually don’t drink anything but water in our house (we’re not big juice or soda drinkers at all), it’s a nice change sometimes.   So yeah…after such an expensive February in which so many big things died on us and had to be replaced I haven’t popped… CONTINUE READING

I recently bought this purple shamrock plant, an oxalis, to put in the living room. I hope it does ok (the succulents, by the way, are still doing fine!). I read that oxalis have resting periods where they will drop all their leaves and appear “dead”, but they are actually “resting” and will produce more sprouts after a few months. Good to know.   I mentioned that January is the one time of year when I’m motivated to spruce up our apartment and we finally got our light fixtures for the living room. I bought this Restoration Hardware task lamp when it was $100 off during their lighting sale a few weeks ago. It replaces a lamp with a large… CONTINUE READING
