Wow, thanks for all the cookie names. I like how some of you came back to make even more suggestions, ha! And amazing that with almost 200 entries so far, there are only a handful of repeat names. That’s crazy. Ok, so we have a lot of names to sift through, and you know what? I realized that we’re less than a week away from our blog anniversary and we always do a giveaway to celebrate, so we’re going to pick 2 winners as usual, 1 random and 1 name winner if we do in fact use a name out of the pool. You get to pick another pack of cookies of your choice to go with your booty, so… CONTINUE READING

the internet is amazing but…

the internet is amazing but…

March 5, 2011 |  Category:   friends life

…meeting with people in real life is amazing too. I’m grateful that I have the internet to chat with people all day while I work from home, usually parked on the couch and wearing something that I wouldn’t want to be caught dead in. It’s saved me from isolation and pulled me out of dipping too far into the occasional bout of insanity from being wrapped up in my own head. It’s good to get out though. Maybe it’s because the weather is improving, but I’m making plans again. I met with about a dozen other designers/small business owners over at my friend Re Jin’s place a few days ago and we talked shop for nearly 6 hours. I’m looking… CONTINUE READING

saturday…or is it sunday?

saturday…or is it sunday?

February 27, 2011 |  Category:   dining out friends life

Kept thinking it was Sunday yesterday. But no, it was Saturday and it kept throwing me off. I’m grateful for the extra weekend day. We don’t have day jobs and tend to work weekends anyway, so I don’t necessarily get that “sunday-pit-in-the-stomach” feeling as we head into the work week, but the kids go back to school tomorrow and we start the rushed morning routine all over again. I don’t know a whole lot of people who live in Manhattan anymore – seems like most of my friends are in Brooklyn or move to Brooklyn eventually, but we did visit one of Mia’s old preschool friends who made that reverse move from Brooklyn a few months ago. Sometimes I try… CONTINUE READING

missing you

missing you

February 23, 2011 |  Category:   friends life

I’m really missing some friends lately, friendships that have drifted apart. Nothing may have happened…but sometimes you end up not spending as much time with someone as you once did. You may not even notice, but then one day you realize that it’s been a month, 5 months, a year. How did this happen? And enough time has lapsed that when you need a friend, they no longer become the first person you reach out to. It’s unrealistic to expect any friendship to stay intact exactly as they are. It’ll evolve as its meant to and people really do outgrow each other, so I’m guessing that when I’m missing a friend, it’s not only about that person, but a particular… CONTINUE READING

cheeseover

cheeseover

February 20, 2011 |  Category:   friends life

What’s that you say? A cheeseover is when your friends Nichole and Evan invite you over to their weekly Friday cheese nights, but then you sleep over because it would be a pain to drive back to Brooklyn from New Jersey. In reality, it was actually hell to get there Friday night. What should have been about a 45 minute drive took us over 3 hours. 2 of those hours were spent crawling at a painfully slow pace through Soho. We drove 3 blocks in an hour and a half. I had to use the bathroom and considered jumping out to go to the Apple store on Prince Street and Mark thought about getting food from a sidewalk vendor. We… CONTINUE READING

valentine’s day and birthday overload

valentine’s day and birthday overload

February 12, 2011 |  Category:   friends life

Mark and I aren’t big on Valentine’s day, probably because for a week, it’s Valentine’s all day, every day. Plus our high school had this tradition where you can buy someone a flower, anonymous or with a note, and then it would get delivered to you during homeroom period on Valentine’s Day. The pretty cheerleader girls always got delivered multiple flowers. Since I never had a boyfriend all throughout high school, it pretty much sucked, plus as art major goths we thought the tradition was stupid. But my friends and I would buy each other sympathy flowers anyway so at least we didn’t walk around school flowerless all day and unloved. I know the gesture is nice, but don’t school… CONTINUE READING

and hello 2011

and hello 2011

January 3, 2011 |  Category:   friends holidays life

I don’t really do resolutions. I don’t need yet another avenue of unrealized goals and dreams to feel bad about myself! But I did make one promise last year and that was to spend more time with friends. I’m happy to say that it was one resolution I made good on. 2010 was a year of friendships and connecting with people. It was most likely the only way I got through the mess that was the first half of the year. When I was a child, we used to go to these epic New Year’s Eve parties with a group of family friends hosted by a rotation of homes every year. The kids had their own party within a party… CONTINUE READING

a social week

a social week

November 19, 2010 |  Category:   dining out friends life

Some weeks are spent hibernating, other weeks are more social. My recent schedule allowed for one of those this week. I met with different people every day and I hung out with a whole lot of people at a party last night. This morning I met with Barbara who is my neighbor and a letterpress card designer. We took our youngest kids to eat pie in the neighborhood (yes, pie for breakfast). And oh, did I say that the weather’s been mild? Well, it was pretty cold this morning. Bringing out the scarves, hats and gloves for this one. And saying no? I said no. It was the right decision and I have no regrets. Have a great weekend.… CONTINUE READING

a new friend + Alices’ tea party

a new friend + Alices’ tea party

November 5, 2010 |  Category:   friends life

Mia’s got a new friend. A little girl who is not new to New York, but new to our neighborhood in Brooklyn. Her family returned to the city just a few weeks before the start of the school year after living in South America for 3 years. Mia and her new friend found each other at the playground the weekend after the first day of school and discovered they were in the same class. Despite their short history together, they have declared they are best friends forever and forever. Now, it doesn’t always work out where you end up being friends with your kids’ friends’ parents, but this means that we also have new friends in the neighborhood. We’ve been… CONTINUE READING

farm fail

farm fail

October 4, 2010 |  Category:   friends life outings

These photos were taken in New Jersey and this is all I got from the day. I mean, you know, we had planned a pleasant apple picking outing with our friends, Little Brown Pen, after dropping off a wholesale order at Semplice in Montclair, but that didn’t happen. Wanna know why? Because family farm activities have become like mobbed, long lined, high stress, high ticketed circuses. At least at the farm we tried to go to today. We chose proximity and convenience since it was only about a 30 minute drive from Nichole’s house, even though this farm was out of apples to pick. We were stuffed on super sized, big portioned diner food and we figured it would still… CONTINUE READING

relaxing birthday parties do exist

relaxing birthday parties do exist

September 28, 2010 |  Category:   friends life nyc

I know because I’ve seen them with mine own eyes. It’s the start of birthday season and so far we’ve been to 2 lovely, relaxing (no, really) outdoor parties the last 2 weekends, the first of which was held at Bryant Park and thrown by my friend Unha for her son’s 5th. I feel like someone should have given me an informational pamphlet in the hospital when I gave birth explaining the complexities of children’s birthday parties. It’s not something you really think about when you become a parent, but there are A LOT of party going, planning, and gift giving and it’s sort of never ending. Now don’t roll your eyes at me. In NYC, it *is* actually complicated… CONTINUE READING

the last dinner at delancey

the last dinner at delancey

September 5, 2010 |  Category:   dining out friends travels

Hard to believe that a week ago today, we were enjoying our last dinner in Seattle with family and friends. Isn’t that the way vacation goes? Upon your return you feel like you’ve been away so very long, but just 3 days in (or thereabouts) you feel like you never left. It’s sort of fitting that our last dinner was at Delancey, the pizza restaurant, perhaps not unlike Franny’s here in Brooklyn, that was opened a year ago by Molly from Orangette and her husband, Brandon. I know that when we begin to think about the store more seriously sometime after the holidays, I’ll be going back and re-reading those entries leading up to the opening day. There are other… CONTINUE READING
