new lamp + guest post

Finally, after years of wanting one, I snagged a vintage George Nelson lamp on eBay the other week. I know I could have bought a new reproduction but this one came with 20 feet of cord which means that we don’t have to hire an electrician to rewire and move our ceiling lights so that it can hang above our table. So what did the girls say when we first turned on the light? “We can see our food!!!”. Seriously. I don’t know how we lived without a light above our dining table all these years. Seems crazy now that we see the difference. I’m in a bit of a frenzy because I have to make some decisions about the… CONTINUE READING

gray or grey?

gray or grey?

We’re gonna do it. Finally after all these years of wanting to paint the apartment but flaking out because it seems like such a huge undertaking, we’re gonna tackle it when we close down our shops for vacation in a few weeks. I’ve always been a white walls sort of person but for a few years I’ve been wanting to paint the living room a light gray. We have one narrow panel painted a chalkboard black that separates the kitchen from the living space so we have taken babysteps in breaking up the whiteness. Also to be painted: the girls’ room and the kitchen backsplash. SO the big question…which gray? There are too many choices! Does anyone have a gray… CONTINUE READING

sharing a room

sharing a room

April 30, 2009 |  Category:   home

We made the decision a while back that Claudine would move into Mia’s room sometime this summer and that we would get bunk beds. Mia’s pretty excited about the bunk beds, but I’m not sure she fully understands the implications of what it means to share her room with her sister. Honestly, if we didn’t have all this stuff from our business to contend with, I think we’d leave things as is since Mia enjoys her privacy and sometimes shuts her door so that she can play by herself in peace. But being that we have boxes, ribbon, packing supplies, labels, etc. etc. stored and tucked into every single available crevice in the apartment, I think it’s time. Most people… CONTINUE READING

It’s been humbling, to say the least, to be so sick for this long, but when I do start to recover it’ll feel like a fresh start and I will never take good health for granted. Ever. I was never one to make New Year’s resolutions, but I feel like that is what I’m doing now because being this inactive makes you itch to move, make and create again.… CONTINUE READING

what the hell, Ikea?

what the hell, Ikea?

One of the things I want to do when we have a bit more disposable income to spend on the house is invest in some light fixtures. We’ve still got the standard ceiling light fixtures that came with the apartment, save for a cheap chandelier that we got at home depot in the kitchen because I couldn’t particularly stand the one that the kitchen came with (although the one we currently have is sort of out of sync with how the rest of the apartment has turned out). The main priority would be to get an electrician install a light above our dining table – in winter months I feel like we eat most meals in near-darkness. But while at… CONTINUE READING

the christmas photoshoot

the christmas photoshoot

January 3, 2009 |  Category:   craft holidays home

After cleaning, organizing and decorating all week long, the photoshoot for the Japanese magazine took place this morning. I didn’t get to do as many Christmas crafts as I would have liked, but I did make garlands out of coffee filters after seeing it here, and made colorful felt garlands for M’s room. I also managed to sew a couple of throw pillows at the last minute from the fabric scraps I purchased at the holiday trunk show from Hable Construction. While the photoshoot ended up being a lot of fun, it was also a good excuse to clean the apartment from top to bottom and purge the place of baby toys and the changing table. I took a few… CONTINUE READING

the tree + a conundrum

the tree + a conundrum

We got one last weekend, and it’s a little scrawny in places, but the girls were really excited when we brought it in and even directed where all the ornaments were to be hung. C was especially particular about where she wanted certain ornaments to go (I mean she is just newly 2 – what in the hell?). When I have a minute, I still need to hang our stockings somewhere (but where, is the big question) and the paper snowflakes that M and I made together last year need to go up as well. OK, so at our holiday trunk show last saturday, a Japanese journalist approached us about photographing our home for the 2009 Christmas issue of a… CONTINUE READING

out with the old chair, in with the new

We have a new chair in the house today. And the upholstery choice was a bit of a surprise to me. I mean it’s velvet, blue velvet. I never imagined that I’d bring a blue velvet chair into the apartment, but well, something about it spoke to me when I saw it at the store. I knew that I loved the shape of the chair, and I knew that it was time to replace our Nurseryworks Storytime Rocker with a new one. While we certainly have some good memories in that chair, the kids started treating it like a swing and an amusement park ride. Mia was especially upset to see it go, but hopefully the couple who bought it… CONTINUE READING

I was the first to wake up this morning despite the fact that I was the last to go to sleep. It’s amazing how well I can function on so little sleep (relatively speaking, of course). I’m not used to being the first up in our house so I thoroughly enjoyed the quiet living room, watching the sun stream in. I often wonder how long we’ll live in this apartment. It’s been 3 years and while the first year was nothing short of a nightmare (and those who know us, know what I mean), the last two years have been most pleasant and I’ve even grown to love this place. It’s a new building in Brooklyn so it has no… CONTINUE READING

when you have some leftover fabric…

when you have some leftover fabric…

March 21, 2008 |  Category:   craft home

Most observant people will do a double take when they spot the little wicker doll chairs in the corner of our living room. This is because we have the same fabric upholstered for the cushions covering our Danish Modern chair that I scored off ebay. I immediately started hunting around for fabric because the cushions seemed in great shape, but the old chenille fabric was all shades of “old man” brown and dragged the chair down. This black and tan graphic print seemed snappy enough to give the chair new life. Now, I consider this a hack job of sorts because covering cushions, especially ones that are not square or rectangle in shape, is trickier than it looks (and I… CONTINUE READING

the little purchases in life

the little purchases in life

March 20, 2008 |  Category:   happy purchases home

Right before Mark became jobless, I went a bit on a spending spree for the house. I had a good freelance year last year and admit that even though I am frugal, I can spend money (with limits, of course) like nobody’s business when I have it. We’re not talking big purchases, but a few nice chairs, some small danish modern chests off ebay, shelving and some art and frames to go with it. It does all add up though, so when we were suddenly dealing with unemployment I felt a whole lot of buyer’s remorse for my recent purchases. At the time I could justify anything – “I work from home…I’m surrounding myself with nice things because I sit… CONTINUE READING
