I have to set aside these leisure days in the city every so often. It’s important. Walking around by myself aimlessly in Manhattan or sometimes with a friend – in this case, my sister-in-law. It’s easy to get caught up in your own head, your own community, your own world, when you work from home. Usually, my daily excursions include the 3 block walk to the kids’ school, nothing more. But nothing beats getting out into the world every so often to look, to taste, to smell. It makes you realize that you are just 1 small piece of the puzzle. It helps remind you why you live here, to appreciate the city which we sometimes forget to do. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a glorious 65 degrees on a late November/ early December morning.
Btw, I’m sort of obsessed with beans on toast after having had it here at Pastis in the Meat Packing District last Monday. I had it again when I took the girls out to dinner at a local English restaurant in our neighborhood, but I am craving this version again, with fried eggs and a savory roasted tomato. Yum!
I hope they’re making it with Heinz beans, as any English person would tell you there is no substitute!
I know exactly what you mean. I work from home too and if I didn’t leave the house for a bit every day, I feel like I’d go nuts being in my own world so much. I think that means my own world sucks a bit, doesn’t it? ๐
Made me laugh…beans on toast was the staple “we need to go food shopping so lets have this for tea” dish when growing up! ๐
This simple dish sounds very delicious. The roasted tomato and the fried eggs cannot go wrong. Mmmm they might be served in my house.
You really need to try some heinz beans with a little bit of worcestershire sauce and some cheddar cheese mixed in. AMAZING.
I couldn’t agree more Jenna, a day out and about by myself, or with a good friend, definitely gives me perspective and gets me out of my own head. Loving these pictures, beans on toast is now on my list.
xx
all that food has made me very hungry so suddenly.
this looks delicious! I totally get your post. I work from home too, and my daily walks consist of going to pick up my daughter from the elementary school in our neighborhood. sometimes me too, leave the kids behind with my husband and aimlessly walk around the mall ( I live in TX, so no city walking for me unfortunately… just to see people and get away from my little world.
I’ve never been inside Pastis but somehow looking at the pictures I knew it’s going to be this place!:)
Your photos are making me sooo hungry….
I’m with you. I do look forward to when the boys a little older so that I don’t have to pack three kids into car seats before I can actually go anywhere.
It’s definitely nice to get out once in a while and be reminded that the world is not just our own little world.

yummm. what a fabulous day out. I really miss having those days. someday, someday ๐
Thank you to bring such nice pictures of nyc in my little corner of France!
Great pictures! Looks like a pretty nice day out ๐
new follower here. enjoying reading your blog!
Jenna, this is exactly how I feel about staying at home/going out – a small piece of puzzle lost somewhere among all these beautiful and colorful toys in the children’s room…
I just got one of your prints on the mail, it looks even better in person! I will try to get an Ikea frame for it and hang in our kitchen.
I agree about getting out of the house. Like right now, I am looking forward to an appointment I have in the city to get a visa so just I can get out there and have a different day! (even if that means a morning in the consulate!)
oh i love the alone time walking around the city, cant get enough of it! a leisurely brekkie to go with that, even better!
This is so true. I don’t work from home, but I’m a full time student/mommy. My world consists of trips to and from school and home. That’s mostly it. And my “nontraditional” age seems to narrow the academic social world as well. I need to make days like this for myself more often, as well.
Beans on toast is my ultimate. So wanting some after seeing this photo … Good luck with the rest of the holiday season – you can do it!
Your pictures not only make me hungry, they make me wish I lived in NYC! I currently reside in Zรผrich, Switzerland with my husband and girls, 5 & 2. Life here is pretty sedate and our schedule echoes yours with school and not going much further than a 1/4 mile radius during the work week. It’s good to get out and about. Thanks for reminding me.
