an unexpected encounter: a surprise boat race

August 28, 2009 |  Category:   family travels

We’ve been back in Brooklyn all week, but I think my fondest memory of our week away was the evening we stumbled upon a boat race, quite accidentally, on one of our evening walks. The normally quiet town beach was littered with people, drinks and chairs. It’ll come as no surprise that Mia made friends right away – she has a knack for walking straight up to strangers and striking up a conversation, something that the rest of us in the family aren’t inclined to do. But when the boats started coming into the finish line one after another, 20 or so in a line, we all cheered together. Turns out that this is a weekly event…just because. It was nice to spend some time getting to know the local town people who lived there year round. Lucky folks.

Those 2 little girls are growing up so fast. Mia really looks like a regular school girl…and do you realize she totally has your legs? They’re so tan. And I love the SMILE shirt.

Oh, the other thing I meant to mention…you’ve talked about how Mia makes friends so quickly. I have to think those are her Aunt Lara’s genes in there somehow. They are peas in a pod when it comes to that winning gregariousness.

That boat race is a cute idea with everyone cheering as the end.

I like Mia’s smile tank as well 😀 It reminds me of this painting of Pintauro in A Box of Sun. Found here:

Rebecca, the tank was a gift, so not sure where it came from. I think aunt Lara got it for her. Lara, do you remember where you got it?

Hi Jenna! I read your blog all the time…love it. 🙂

My husband and I talk a lot about moving somewhere in New England “someday”. Now, after these pictures you’ve posted of your vacation, I am borderline obsessed! Even if we don’t make a move in the near future, we HAVE to take a vacation on the North Fork.

    Take Care!
