Having family far away really sucks. It used to not be so hard – the kids were too little to understand what it really meant to say goodbye, and while Claudine is still in that phase, Mia is old enough to know that when we say goodbye, it means that the person won’t be there in the morning. She spent most of the evening on Aunt Lara’s last day very grumpy and distant (hence no photos of her). Guess you learn how to do that early on – distance yourself from that person so it won’t hurt as much later when they’re gone. But that never really works, does it?
No, it doesn’t. And there’s no “getting over it.” There’s no such thing.
Ya. My husband and I are living in Singapore (away from both our families in Malaysia). Whenever we visit home, the feeling I have with my sisters (16 and 19) on the day of departure is never easy. Not so much with my mum but sisters are hard. We do almost everything together 🙂 sleep, eat, DIY pedicure, wash, brush and tie our hair, talk about secret admirers and those we admire… Thanks for today’s post, Jenna 🙂 It hits home!
I know exactly what you mean. Both my husband and I live far from our families, we feel like we always have to re introduce our daughter to her grandparents, she remembers them but it takes some time before she warms up again, when she does after a couple of days, the process of saying goodbye has to happen. It sucks.
you have a very beautiful family by the way, i am following you and have your link in my blog. I wish i live close to try your treats…
It sucks big time, I agree! Especially hard when you only get to see them once a year or once every few years!!!!
Aw. That last line just crushed my heart a little. Henry gets really sad when people leave. Even every single night his great grandpa comes over for dinner and then goes home he doesnt want to say goodbye. Instead we say, “We love you GGpop!”.
It is so sad to have family living far away.
That top photo is so adorable. What a jewel she is!
And yes, family is a treasure. So glad you were able to have time with yours.
