the luxury of time

June 18, 2010 |  Category:   friends life nyc outings

I don’t always have it. But I have some now.

I promise I won’t waste it.

But sometimes it’s good to just hang out with a friend all day. To go to the museum and not really see any art, but sit in the cafe or the sculpture garden for hours surrounded by beautiful things and talk, bitch, scheme, plan, commiserate, celebrate.

And it’s also good to end the day by joining up with another friend to go see a mindless movie that can only be seen with a group of girlfriends (OMG, how ridiculous was Sex and the City 2?). We were greeted with a sliver of waning light as the day transitioned into night when we left the theater, and we sought after a place to sit outdoors. We ended up at the Coffee Shop in Union Square and talked about all the stupid shit we did back when we were younger, here in NYC. The movie may have been over the top ridiculous (really, whose lives are like that? How completely silly), but escapism doesn’t necessarily have to be deep or even good to be enjoyed. If anything, it reminded me that girlfriends have your back.

I heard an interview with Sarah Jessica Parker who said that she had a theory that all three of Carrie’s friends are really just characters in one of her books and they don’t actually exist. This would explain all the over the top-ness, the clothing, the apartments, the dates, and more importantly, all that free time they have.

    That is so true.
About your other blog post, about being unsure about taking the B&M leap and building out a kitchen…if and when that happens I just wanted to say that it’s been nice to have met you when you were still “little” and growing. Seeing everything it takes to try and convince yourself that the next big step will work. I think some of us long time blog readers feel a fond attachment to your success as weird as that may sound. There’s alot of people rooting for you to win 🙂

I agree, time is luxury which the most of us don’t have these days. I’d love to use this luxury with my girlfriends, too!

That sounds like the best day ever. It’s too bad days like that are so few and far between. I guess we can just appreciate them more when we do have them.

Sounds like a great way to spend your time:)

When I was working a job I wasn’t particularly excited about, I would often head to the museum before my shift. Look at some pieces, then sit at the outdoor cafe and read. The creative space always seemed to put things in perspective and inspire me to keep on truckin’ after my dream…

The first picture is absolutely stunning! Also, love how you write about your day in such a short but lovely post. Brief and to the point and leaving me 100% jealous. I need some friend time. Think I may have to schedule a museum/movie/girlfriend date, if time permits…
