distractions, boredom and stepping out of your comfort zone

See these shoes? Could be kinda tacky with the wrong outfit, right? (or maybe you think they’re just tacky, lol). I forgot I had these funny leopard ballet flats I bought years ago, so I wore them one day last week with slim gray cords, a hoodie and a blazer. Shopping in your own closet…cheap fixes when you’re trying not to spend money. These black boots I did purchase recently, but they were cheap(ish) and so not the kind of shoes I normally wear (and quite honestly I still don’t really know what I’m supposed to wear with them other than really skinny jeans and that would sort of makes me feel like I was trying too hard, but at what I don’t know). I had every intention of returning them, but I kept them and have worn them out a few times and they are surprisingly comfortable. Goes to show you, you never know. This total impulse buy was a reminder that it’s a good thing to step out of your comfort zone once in awhile. We all get into ruts. I’m in another one now, but sometimes something as simple as putting on something different to wear shakes things up. Makes you walk differently. I think I am just bored these days. Life is generally fine, things are fine, but nothing is really exciting, you know? So I’ve taken to getting out and walking around the city by myself when I have the opportunity to get away, which is a little more often these days given my current schedule. This may just be a distraction, but it reminds me of the days when I used to walk all over the city, pre-kids, pre-busines, pre-everything-my-life-is-now.

(* Oh, and for those waiting for an email from me, I lost my emails at this address one day and I know a few of you wrote with questions. I don’t have your address anymore. I am sorry. )

I can relate in a lot of ways to what you express here. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for the reminder to step out and shake it up a bit!

Oh, and those boots would go great with tights and skirts, or leggings and a dress/tunic. I’ve found in my closet to layer my summer stuff to make it work for the weather now. ๐Ÿ™‚

I know how you feel, and I am feeling so lucky that I am currently doing just that, walking around the city, discovering it, but with my little girl… which makes it a little difficult at times… but I know I’ll miss it all when I get too busy with life again!

    Hi Jenna!
It’s funny to read about you being a bit bored because life is just going as normal. I know what you mean. But here I am, a Swedish girl living family life in a really small place in Sweden, loving to read your blog because it’s describing a life so different from mine but still with the same everyday struggles and reflections. And I would be so thrilled if I were in New York right now! I was there this time last year and spent 10 days there in 1999. I love NYC! You’re just living your normal life and I think it’s a really fascinating life! But everything gets normal and sometimes boring. I think you’re doing it right – just getting out a bit from the comfort zone in small but significant ways.
I pop in here almost every day to see what you write and look at your beautiful photos. Thanks for sharing in such a beautiful way!

    You have tiny feet! ๐Ÿ™‚

I was looking at a similar pair of boots in brown. Couldn’t figure out what I would wear them with so I never ordered them. So what do you wear with them? Boot cut jeans would cover the most interesting part of the boot and I’m definitely not a leggings kind of girl. Not since 1988 anyway.

I completely know how you feel!!!!

You rock, Jenna! Reading your blog is part of making a day beautiful ๐Ÿ™‚ Love it, love it, love it ~

I feel you: i’ve been going to a different yoga class lately, which allows me to walk there and back…and I remember what it used to be like to walk everywhere before I had a child. I love it!

Hi Jenna, I feel stuck and bored these days too and have been doing the sameโ€“ shopping in my closet. Your blog is such an inspiration, even when you say that you feel like you’re in a rut. Btw- the boots rock!

Exploring the city is a great use of in-between-jobs time filler as I know too well. It also gives your photography some good exposure though:

Rachel, those boots look smaller than they are. I have size 7 feet. I wear these boots with…skinny jeans. They just don’t look right with any other pants.

Those boots are very cute, Jenna. Are they Frye? Looks similar to the Frye boots I wanted last year.

Do you think you’ll end up using your new schedule as a way to start up some new passions, like with photography, as you mentioned a little while ago?
This post is really relevant for me, I have been sitting at home scared to make a decision about a career, and finally I have an idea that I think I just need to run with, like you said because you have to take chances and do things that are a little bit scary sometimes.

  • Jenna October 20, 2009 at 5:42 pm

Christie: no they aren’t frye – don’t have the budget to buy boots that I’m not sure of for that kind of money. I got these at Aldo and paid under $100, but now that I’m thinking about it, yes I know the Frye boots you are talking about. The leather on these boots are amazingly soft.

Alicia: run with the idea. My “problem” right now is total lack of motivation, but yes, you would think that I would take advantage of this time to do something productive, given my usual complaints about not having any free time!

Funny, I was just in NYC today, and had a chance to walk for a few blocks. I also thought about what it was like just to walk around and take things in. I never let my mind rest enough to do that anymore. When did things get so complicated?

  • Nina October 21, 2009 at 1:23 am

You know what’s wrong with those shoes? The odd shaped heel! I ordered shoes with the same heels from Aldo and when I finally tried it, it looked really weird. Tried wearing it with skinny jeans and the whole day I was out I just wanted to go home because I felt so uncomfortable. I never used those shoes again.

  • Jenna October 21, 2009 at 7:35 am

Nina, see that’s funny, because I don’t normally wear heels (on an everyday, casual basis) and I found these to be so comfortable.
