Forgot to share what Mark got for my birthday back in April – earrings by Stone and Honey. I had the pleasure of meeting Teresa last summer in Portland and this is my first piece from her. I love them.

Remember these Madewell sandals I posted about a few months ago? I was hoping they would be my everyday summer staple and they have become that shoe, even with that little 1.5″ wedge heel (I don’t notice the heel at all – they feel like flats, but who wouldn’t want to be 1.5″ taller?). I’ve worn them nearly every day since the weather got warm enough for sandals and they were comfortable right away out of the box – no need to break them in. At the suggestion of a reader, I did reinforce the soles which pretty much negated the money I saved by buying them on sale, but I’m glad I did because it adds more traction and it’ll extend the life of the shoe. Did any of you pick up a pair when I posted about them? How do you like them?
I don’t usually buy matching clothes for the girls, but I couldn’t pass up buying each of them this swim coverup from Old Navy. The material is like a slub knit and honestly, it could be a bit thicker, but I wanted to get a coverup that wasn’t terrycloth which I’m not really a fan of (it’s like wearing a towel! Which I know is the point in a coverup, but still). The styling is a lot cuter than some of the shapeless coverups I’ve bought for them in the past and judging by their response when I pulled them out this past weekend when we went swimming, they approved of them too.
And lastly, can we talk about shorts? As in, do you wear them? I have a running joke with my friend Sara because she disapproves of shorts and I wear them so I taunt her about wearing shorts every chance I get. You know, clothes are funny. Your perception of what is appropriate and flattering can become fluid with what is on trend and in stores (uh, skinny jeans). I didn’t wear shorts for a long time, not since I was probably a kid – and by shorts I mean shorts with an inseam of 4 or 5 inches – but I did wear longer shorts that came down above the knee for years which I now think are hideous on me. They aren’t a flattering length. But shorts, like dresses and skirts, kept getting shorter and shorter in the stores over the years and suddenly, they were ok! Alright, maybe not to some people shorts hating people, but I hate wearing jeans in hot weather and I don’t always want to wear dresses or skirts, so shorts it is! I bought this pair using the Anthropologie birthday discount gift card they mail out on your birthday and it helped me make the splurge (I do think $68 is way pricey for a pair of shorts without that discount). Again, like a lot of items lately, I think I would have passed on them if I was just judging solely on the photo on their website, but they ended up being a good purchase; I’ve already worn them many times this month. I also buy shorts like these 3″ inch J Crew ones to wear under short dresses in the summer, kind of like the girls who will refuse to leave the house in dresses if they aren’t wearing shorts like these under them. When did they become so modest?

I love shorts. Would wear them all the time if it weren’t for the muffin top issue. It was great while I was pregnant cause I could just wear maternity shorts and the bulge above the waistband I could attribute to having a baby inside me. If I could find a flattering pair of shorts, I would wear them all the time in the warmer season…

I personally refuse to wear dresses or skirts without something underneath, but for me it’s less about modesty than freedom. If there’s something underneath I can jump and roll around in the grass or whatever else my heart desires, and otherwise I’d have to think about keeping my knees together and sitting like a lady. I don’t need that in my life!

I bought that Anthropologie pair of shorts with a discount too. They’re super comfortable/versatile. Love them.

      Ha, funny! They’re good, right?

It’s true that shorts bring on the controversy. It seems like people either love them or hate them…nobody seems to be ambivalent. I used to wear them all the time when I was in my 20s but now I feel super dumpy in them. I can’t find the right length! It’s a good thing I live out here because, theoretically, I would only have the chance to wear them a few days a year. As you know, you can get away with never having to wear them in western WA!

that’s how I felt with the longer shorts – dumpy! It’s really too hot here not to consider wearing them and i don’t like wearing dresses all the time.

I am definitely in the hate camp for shorts, for the most part. I do like those dressy shorts on women who can carry them off (I am not one of them…) but regular camp shorts on grown women? Blech.

Also, I have never heard the term “slub cotton”. Now I know… I just bought “beach dresses” from Mini-Boden for my girls. Terrycloth, with a fitted waist. We haven’t had a chance to try them out at the beach but they love them at the pool because the locker rooms are freezing.

those are nice, but the long sleeves are a bit much for our needs. Can’t beat $16 price tag of the Old Navy ones either!

I bought both the Gap legging jeans and the Madewell sandals because you raved about them, and I have to say, I LOVE THEM. I can’t get over how much I like the sandals — they just feel so well-made, they look fabulous, and they’re super comfy! With a heel! I have unforgiving feet so I’m quite thrilled with the purchase. Keep those recs coming!

That’s great! Yes, I couldn’t believe how comfortable they were even with that heel.
