staying indoors

January 17, 2009 |  Category:   happy purchases life

The kids and I stayed indoors all day. Really, it was too cold and there was nowhere to go, so why bother? I’m not sure what we did to fill the entire day, but it crept along and now it’s evening and the day is almost done.

It saids volumes about how cold it’s been if we’re looking forward to tomorrow when temperatures will break 30 degrees. It might even feel downright mild, but at least I’ll finally feel prepared to face the cold from now on. For years I promised myself I would buy a serious down coat and 2 years ago I did, but here’s some advice: never EVER buy a coat a few weeks after you’ve given birth, especially a full length, puffy down coat. What was I thinking?? Granted, even I was surprised that I lost most of the baby weight in a few weeks (quicker than the first time around). Even so, I found myself swimming in that coat after a few weeks of wear and I really did end up looking like I was wearing a sleeping bag, so I gave it away.

I’ve been hunting around online for a coat ever since the weather became brutal and it was clear that my everyday coat of 10 years wasn’t cutting it, so I was pleasantly surprised that I found the North Face Arctic Parka that I was considering in a neighborhood store on sale. It isn’t perfect – I wish it were longer and I wish it didn’t have a big North Face logo right in the front AND the back, but this coat is serious business and I look forward to testing it out tomorrow. My feet, on the other hand, have been downright toasty since I invested in a pair of waterproof shearling-lined boots by Aquatalia 2 years ago. They aren’t pretty, and yeah, you can argue that they are almost Ugg-like, but at least they don’t have that weird “shoe blends into sole” thing that I hate about Uggs. They are downright WARM though and I wear them when it’s too cold and slushy to wear the flat black riding boots that I usually wear everyday (another worthwhile purchase this year). And if I knew about this hat before it sold out, I might have been tempted by it too. That’s the dangerous thing about being stuck indoors – the temptations of online shopping…and there are all these sales! And not to mention all the Spring stuff that’s starting to trickle in and tempt us with warmer days and lighter clothes. Seriously, I need to step away from the computer when I am in a weak moment of thinking that everything in my closet is tired and so blah.

kathleen, oh, I should have clarified, that is the attic from a dollhouse at the children’s museum- 2 things of which I don’t have – a big dollhouse or an attic playroom/workspace. I guess I was daydreaming about it.

on closer inspection i can see that everything is miniature. i would love a big attic as well. i did have one many moons ago but we only lived in that house for a year and we never got a chance to utilize it. i think it housed boxes that we’re never even unpacked. well, maybe someday we’ll both have attics and big dollhouses . . . here’s hoping . . . 🙂
