this month’s obsessions

July 20, 2012 |  Category:   happy purchases

It’s time for my once-a-month frivolous post on material wants, yay! (it can’t all be serious all the time around here. Guys, all 3 of you who read the blog, you can skip this post as usual).

So you may recall that last month I put myself on a spending freeze, and I did it. I didn’t spend any money outside of what we absolutely needed, but as soon as July 1st rolled around, the floodgates opened. Yeah, I got sucked into the summer sales. I didn’t go crazy or anything, but the girls needed new sneakers! And backpacks and lunchboxes to replace the ones that they’ve been carrying around for 3 years. And then I saw all these dresses! Oh, so easy to get caught up in the shopping wormhole.
So some of my purchases and obsessions this month:
I bought these Onitsuka Tiger Asics sneakers for Mia on sale in orange and black. I have these sneakers myself in green, so the blurring of lines between mother and daughter fashion has officially begun, ergh.
And for Claudine, these purply pink Merrell Kids Solo Origins. She wore them for the first time today because the weather is weirdly September-like and drizzly and 20 degrees cooler than just 2 days ago. It’s still so odd to see Miss C. in real sneakers. Her big sneaker feet always remind me of how Robert Smith looked in his sneakers, if you know what I’m talking about.
I bought this dress for me. Am I too old to wear this? Oh, I don’t care. I’m actually not really a dress wearing girl. Remember this post about this dress I bought last year? Guess how many times I’ve worn it. Once. I have no idea why. I’m just not super comfortable in dresses I suppose, but once summer and warm weather rolls around, I’ll throw them on because anything else is too hot. This dress is perfect for that, and I’ve worn it often.
And speaking of dresses, I am sort of obsessed over this Tsumori Chisato one. I mean I would never buy it at that price, and it is sort of an odd dress, but I love that whole outfit. The sandals with the socks and everything.
Ugh, this mirrored dresser kills me. I will never be able to afford it. But I saw it in real life recently at a friend’s house and now I want it even more. Never mind the fact that I have nowhere to put it.
And the sandals above? On the left are Zara sandals I bought on clearance a few years ago (I think it cost all of $20 and they’ve held up), and the ones on the top right are these that I bought with a partial gift certificate. I don’t love the jute braiding. I think it’s totally unnecessary and would look 10x better without, but I do love everything else about the sandal and it’s super comfortable.
What about you? Have you bought anything good lately?

I LOVE the Tsumori Chisato dress! Sigh, the price. It looks like really comfortable.

I just bought a….corkboard! Exciting no? I’m excited because I can pin all the stuff that was previously on my refrigerator. 🙂 I love summer sales because our summer doesn’t really get going until August anyway!

just bought a tote from anthro that i’m using as a laptop/work bag.
and a trellis rug in petal for my little girl’s room.
i’ve been on a spending freeze for awhile but the floodgates will open since we just bought a house 🙂 and my kids will finally have their own room, hence the rug purchase.

I love that anthro dresser. No place for it either.

Today I bought a bunch of basics via the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. Camisoles, undies, fancy lotions… it feels good to replace the stuff that I use all the time and just look ratty now. Dresses and shoes are always fun but new basics make me feel good from the inside-out.

Summer month are a difficult time to have a spending freeze. All the sales are so enticing, I somehow jusitfy it (I’ll be saving money if I buy it on sale now vs full price when I really need it.. hee hee). I love the Antro dress, and no you’re not too young. . Hope you got it at the sale price.

Jenna, it’s funny you posted this because I am feeling kind of like I want to spend on me too! Too much non spending or spending on the kid and not on me.

I have bought a couple of black dresses and some Rieker Celia 66 shoes, super comfy although borderline old lady shoes. I’m all about comfort these days. And I got a really sweet pink flare skirt at a garage sale for $5 and I swear it’s my favourite skirt right now.

I think I want to adopt a new rule though, anything new that comes in, something has to exit the house. We need to tackle the clutter. I love you apartment… and I think it is because you minimize the clutter. I never see it in your photos.

Your comment about the Urban Outfitters dress made me laugh. I just wrote a blog post about my confusion regarding what is appropriate to wear once you hit a certain age- I had cutoffs in mind, specifically, but I do buy lots of stuff at UO still and often I’m by far the oldest person in the store at the age of 33 🙂

  • Jenna July 20, 2012 at 5:14 pm

@vivian oh yeah. I totally rule with the no clutter, haha. I think I’m allergic to it.

@Erin If you are the oldest at 33 in the UO store, then I must be a grandma when I’m there

i love when you write posts like these because i think you have such great taste and style. right now i’m in the market for backpacks. i normally don’t go for the character bookbags and normally just get them from lands end or llbean but is there a particular place you shop at for the girls school bags and such? by the way, love the sandals!

  • j July 20, 2012 at 5:23 pm

    …and the nail color!!!!

  • Jenna July 20, 2012 at 5:31 pm

@J we just normally do lands End too. Reliable and well made, if a little boring. They just had a $20 off sale so I got bought the lunch boxes and backpacks there. They had some nice prints though this year! And the nail color is American Apparel Neon Nail Polish in Violet.

i think it’s ok to treat oneself materially sometimes! it’s the little pleasures – & sometimes they cost money 🙂 (i like to think of myself as a champagne socialist, hehe!)

  • Katherine July 21, 2012 at 3:59 pm

Haha, not gonna lie, I sort of love this materialistic post! It’s so different from your regular posts but a nice change once in a while! And I have been obsessed with that mirrored dresser for a long time too but of course would never be able to afford such a beautiful thing!

  • j July 21, 2012 at 9:31 pm

    Thanks Jenna!!

I know what you mean about dresses in the summer time. I’m in DC and it’s been really hot here. Been living in either cotton dresses or skirts with a button down shirt for work. Randomly bought a dress on sale in Target for $15. Their dresses don’t usually fit me, but the Mossimo Kimono short sleeve dress did!

I’m thirty-one and a mom The only clothing I bought this summer is Vince’s Little Boy Tee in black, which was on sale at Revolve Clothing ($43). Love it!

Last year, I bought a reversible jacket from the Swedish label The Local Firm, on sale ($70) at UO. I wore it almost everyday that autumn.

  • zivar July 22, 2012 at 2:28 pm

i bought these ( in both colors.. so comfortable, chic, and priced perfectly for unpredictable (rain, snow, hail?) fall in brooklyn.

  • jasmine July 22, 2012 at 5:40 pm

Are you kidding? Jenna, that dress is going to look gorgeous on you! I bought an iPad… still kind of getting used to it but it’s very much one of my favourite latest purchases. Oh, and this dress from Anthropologie.

  • Shannon(8footsix) July 22, 2012 at 9:10 pm

I just found your blog today! So happy to meet you!

I bought a brown leather belt last week…pretty chunky but with these cut outs that make a pattern…quite textured…I am learning how to accessorize, by, umm, putting on accessories!!! It’s not as complicated as I make it sound 😉

  • Jessica H. July 23, 2012 at 1:14 am

To me, Anthropologie is so much better with interior design than clothing. That dresser is stunning. I also got sucked into the summer sales and bought a Club Monaco skirt and Michael Kors boots. Though I’m making room for new items in my wardrobe by selling off old items on eBay…

what a fun post! kudos for sticking to the spending freeze for a month.. so hard to do, especially with kids. i love everything you got, and now i’m totally shopping on urban outfitters. i just bought this dress (except in mint) this weekend: needed a dress for a wedding this weekend that i can nurse in (what do other nursing mothers do when they have a wedding to attend?! it took me forever to find something.).

I just bought a pair of pink Fluevog shoes to wear to my graduation in the fall. I finished my masters of arts education on Saturday, so the shoes were a present to myself!

  • Jenna July 23, 2012 at 3:08 pm

@Susan wow, Fleuvogs. I had so many pairs in the early 90s! Kind of amazing that they stuck around all these years. Happy graduation!

I love the dresser (have been looking for the less expensive version and wider version of this for our bedroom), you’re not too old for the dress, and here’s a link to the newest addition to my obsession with fountain pens

  • Jeanne July 26, 2012 at 12:59 pm

I have that same Madewell dress in khaki and cream. I wore it to death last summer and was looking forward to wearing it again this summer. I threw it on the first hot day we had only to have a bottle of nail polish shatter in the sink resulting in hot pink polish splattered all over the dress. I am hoping the cleaners can work his magic, but I am doubtful. Luckily, I have the black and white version to replace this one. I must say, the pockets are my favorite part of the dress!

Like you, I recently got sucked into all the summer sales and was able to stock up on essentials for the kiddos.
