real simple pop up, a giveaway, facebook, a disclaimer, yada yada

November 30, 2010 |  Category:   holidays nyc the biz

ok, so here’s the thing. You all know how I feel about the increasing commercialization of blogs. That whole world, however, is not unfamiliar to me. I ran a blog for years that was all about product pushing, sponsorships, giveaways and ads too after all, but it became too much and that’s why I started this blog. I’ll never say never, but you won’t see an ad on here.

The thing is, even though the focus of our blog is not on the business so much anymore, it’s still a part of it if only because our lives are inextricably intertwined with it in every way. But can I tell you the truth? I always feel a wee bit uncomfortable promoting our shop on this blog or on any social media space. It feels like I’m yelling, “BUY OUR COOKIES!” every time I do. Who wants to be hit over the head with cookies every other day? It would annoy you, it would annoy me.

So what’s this Real Simple thing, you say? Isn’t this the very sort of thing that I’m talking about? Well, we *are* trying to run a business and I know I am being ridiculous with this whole aversion-to-promotion-thing (so please don’t make me feel any more ridiculous. I know you’re all rolling your eyes, I see you). Plus I thought it’d be fun to do a stint as guest blogger for the Pop-Up shop with a few of my other fellow guest blogger friends. You know, for the holidays. The Real Simple Pop-Up shop is expecting up to 10,000 visitors daily. It’s open from 10am-10pm, December 1st-6th and I’ll be there tomorrow, opening day, in the afternoon around 1:30. I’ll also make another visit Saturday when a certain somebody *ahem* Tim Gunn *cough* signs his book. Take a look at the schedule of events. It’s a good, festive time and if you see me, say hi!

And so if you’ve read this far, there’s one more thing. I’ve been given gift bags of Real Simple booty to give away to my readers. I don’t normally do this sort of thing, but it’s the holidays! So what’s in the gift bag? Some really good stuff, yo, like Real Simple books! Notebooks! Stationery! Nail polish! Other free stuff! I have 7 to give away, but to win, go to our FaceBook page, become a fan and leave a comment on our Real Simple post. Ok, see what I did there? Our FaceBook page has been rather neglected and lonely (give it some love, will ya?), but I’m trying, I’m trying!

    Cookies are good. Promote away!

~groan~ I still do not like facebook + annoyed that it has infiltrated everything.

Cookies though I love! I’m quite happy for you to talk about your baked goodies everyday.

I agree with Kitty on the Facebook and the cookies. In fact, I don’t mind you promoting your cookies–it’s YOUR product, not someone else’s. Also, I don’t mind the Real Simple mention–you’re doing that elsewhere, really. When I read some of the other blogs out there lately, they are peppered with sponsored posts. Yours isn’t like that–keep doing what you’re doing, as far as I’m concerned.

You don’t have to promote your cookies every post – just put yummy pictures at the end of EVERY post and we will succumb quite naturally.

i’m totally with you on the aversion to promotion thing, so i really appreciate that you keep things toned down here and on your twitter. it’s refreshing 🙂

Getting hit over the head with cookies every day? I can think of worse things…

Your blog is wonderful. Your photography is awesome. Your girls are gorgeous and you are trying to have a life and make a living and share so much with all of us. I agree with “ish” above!!
What has turned me off several blogs I followed was the gradual over selling of themselves – sponsoring really. I felt every time I visited I was being bombarded with advertisements, and ultimately what happens is the blog and person changes. They tailor make their blog so they will be chosen by BHG / Home Depot / whoever. So the uniqueness, creativity and talent subtlety changes. And they become less interesting. More corporate. Just my opinion.

Oooh I agree, just post pictures of those cookies and marshmallows, that should be enough!

Actually, I love reading about the running of small businesses, especially creative businesses. The marketing, the managing, the creative process, its so interesting and inspiring to me to read about how people make their dreams and ideas concrete reality. It allows me to live vicariously through other people’s experiences!

Didn’t even know you had a FB page 😛 See there. It’s good to promote even just a little bit.

I just discovered this blog! And it seems I’m about the millionth person to think it’s really great. Ah well, some band wagons are worth jumping on, eh? Especially love the pics of your adorable daughter below!

I like that it’s not littered with adds, but I understand the need to put in a little promotion every now and again. Speaking of…
I’m new here and I looove visits/visitors! You (or any lucky person who happens to read this) are welcome welcome welcome at:
