feeling kind of blah

Now that things have settled down to a more manageable pace, I’ve realized that I’m feeling a little down these days. I think it’s the isolation of work and cookies. It’s literally all I’ve been doing for the past few months and while I’ve been in touch with hundreds of people through email, I’ve had very little social interaction. The thing about being self-employed, through multiple fronts, is that the work doesn’t end. I already know this since I’m quite used to the freelance lifestyle, but now it’s compounded by the fact that Mark and I share an additional business together and baking is just a small part of the business. There isn’t much free time to decompress or hang out with friends. I’m also realizing that we just haven’t had a day of fun in a long time. Not alone, not as a couple and not as a family. We’re thinking of taking most of saturday off…the weather may not cooperate…any ideas?

jenna – one upside to doing what you do – how you do it – is the flexibility to be around your children. My husband and I did the freelance, work from home thing for several years and I remember feeling like you do right now. It can be isolating. Now my husband is home with the kids and I’ve gone back to working in a corporate setting. Only in retrospect have I realized how close my family grew during that time. I had the chance to really experience my children growing up and it was beautiful. It was tough and sometimes I felt like I lived in a bubble, but it was a bonding experience that I would take back. When times get tough – try to think about what you and your husband are teaching the girls. To follow their passions – that is so big – and you are both living it. In the end, your example to your children will make everything you’ve sacrificed worth all the hard work. All the best!

From all I get from just reading your blog, I assert you are bringing fun to people you do email and come in contact with, and I bet your girls get the fun from you and your husband. That being said, there is something missing for you, so definitely take Saturday off! We can accomplish so much in the “work” we often forget that the “play” is just as vital in having the results we want and living as we wish.
If the weather doesn’t allow a romp outdoors, how about a movie fest, doing games or puzzles together, making a family artpiece… or ask someone to help with the girls as I’m sure they’d love to support you and Mark having some couple time, too.
