it really feels like summer now

Hard to believe it’s mid-July and we’ve not yet had a proper heatwave here in NY. Hell, even the humidity is under control. Remember how unbelievably frigid cold it was this winter in the city? This summer is also abnormal, devoid of the usual suffocating humidity and heat. It’s even been downright cool in the evenings. Weird. This weekend felt like summer though – not necessarily in temperature, but in activity. We drove to Montclair, NJ saturday afternoon for a barbeque hosted by one of my twitter friends (fogandthistle) where I met 4 more twitter peeps (littlebrownpen, wordsatplay, cicadastudio and vertigodesign) who live in the area. We brought cupcakes, ice cream, sorbet and s’mores along with a blow torch to toast the treats up. What does it say that my girls were the only ones who licked and slurped their plates of ice cream? (hmmm…maybe I need to revisit table manners).

Sunday was spent at a pool birthday party in a Brooklyn backyard. In a total 180 from last summer, Claudine has fallen in love with the water and she could have floated around in that hot pink inner tube all afternoon if we let her. The water was cold, but the kids stayed in the pool, lips purple, teeth chattering, till we had to coax them out with the embrace of warm towels. The adults sat around in lawn chairs watching the kids and shooting the shit. Summer as it’s meant to be.

It was so great meeting you all face-to-face. The girls are ever bit as charming as your blog would lead people to believe. I was particularly impressed with Mia’s knock-knock jokes and her inventiveness of mixing the sorbet and ice cream to make her own concoction….wonder where she gets that from?!

On a side note, Matt and I appreciate you guys schlepping out to NJ from Brooklyn. Hat’s off to you guys for doing the bridge-and-tunnel trip with kids in tow. You guys rock!

Oh my those smores look amazing (mouth watering now). And didn’t realize there were so many Montclair area bloggers. My family lives there now so we’re there all the time. Miss me some Jersey =)

Really fun pictures of the girls. They look, as you say, as summer should look. Esp the ‘back’ shot of Miss C on the swing & in the pool. It’s certainly tribute to the fact that kids really can outgrow glitches!

Wow, those smores look divine! Please share recipe, or at least tell me they will be available for sale!

Thanks guys. Not sure mark will give out the recipe as it’s one of his “signature” dishes he’s always made. We’d also then have to tell you how we make our marshmallows and well, we have to keep some things secret.

Can you at least sell the smores, then? LOL. I once asked Mark about that and he said they didn’t do so well, but if you can’t tell me how to make ’em, you got to at least let me buy ’em from you! 🙂
