And it went something like this:
Mia: “I’m writing in my diary right now and I don’t want anyone to read what I’m writing”.
Claudine walks over to the table where Mia’s writing in her diary and hovers.
Mia: “CLAUDINE! Go away! I don’t want you to read it!”.
Me (while washing dishes): “Uh, Claudine doesn’t know how to read yet. She doesn’t know what you’re writing”.
Mia: “But she knows how to read SOME words, like “I” and “Mia”.
Me: “Um, ok, but she’s not going to get any information just from those words out of context. But anyway, Claudine, you should give Mia her privacy.”
Claudine walks away, reluctantly.
Me: “What are you writing in there anyway?”
Mia: “Stuff. Private stuff. And I’m going to make sure no one reads my diary by switching up the key and locks so no one can open it”.
Me: “Ok, but you just told me how to open it. You don’t want mommy to read your diary either?”
Mia: “No”.
Me: “Ok, guess it’s really private”.
“Do it”.
I hear a little voice and I look down. Claudine appears out of NOWHERE and is suddenly standing next to me. She cups her hands around her mouth and whispers again, “Do it.”
Me: “Huh? Do what?”
Claudine (points in Mia’s direction behind her other hand so Mia can’t see):
“Read. The. Diary.”
Oh wow! Mia is growing up, wanting more privacy and doing more things independently. I did find Claudine’s reaction somewhat amusing though.
P.S. I love that Beverly Clearly’s books are in the background of the photos. Ramona Quimby is such a classic children’s character. I can relate to her wanting to empty all the toothpaste out of a tube too. Haha!
HA! That is absolutely priceless. Kids seriously amaze me with their humor. Oh + definitely had a hello kitty diary like that back in the day… love it.
This totally put a smile to my face.
what do your girls enjoy playing with? How do you manage their toys? Thanks.
haha!!..so funny! All this children’s jealousy..
Mmmh. There’s a plot going on…
That’s so cute! She might be a detective one day with such curiosity and discretion 😉

Hahaha.. very funny! 🙂
Such cute dialogue! Just make sure that Mia doesn’t forget the key/lock combination to her diary. I can remember forgetting how to unlock my diary… not pretty!
that’s too cute:)
oh dear lord, this made my day. hilarious! love it.
ahhh, life with girls 😀 That made me smile 😀
That is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard! I can just see little C trying to conspire with you. What a rascal. I’m glad Mia has a diary, too. Good habit to get into. Can you believe I still have all my old diaries? Just can’t bring myself to toss them.
And to think I thought the voice would be coming from the back of your mind. 🙂
Thanks for the laugh; that’s a pretty awesome story. Thanks for sharing! : P
Very cute, made my day!

Been a reader of your blog for a while but never commented–I just had to, however, when I read this post! Such a sweet story–your two girls sound like they’ve got lots of spunk and individuality already. Absolutely adorable.
So funny! This entry brought back memories from my childhood. I had a Minnie Mouse diary with a lock. Also, I see that you have the whole Beverly Cleary book set! Now I want to buy it for myself.
Another great post, Jenna. I love that Mia is reading Beverly Cleary’s books. She is one of my favorite writers, too. 🙂
Haha!!! Great post! Your girls are not only adorable, but really funny too!!!
Oh man, we have a very similar dynamic in our house. One day when my older daughter (also 7) was at school, my little one (almost 4) disappeared and got very, very quiet. I sensed she was up to something, and when I called her name and walked down the hall to find her, she came tearing out of her sister’s room all startled. I said “Oh. I think someone was playing with Sissy’s toys.” And my little one said “Mama. She’s at school. Let’s DO IT!!!!!”
oh my god. i just laughed out loud for several minutes. actually, still laughing. so f-ing funny. i made my husband (who, i suspect, has deep distain for the blogs i read) listen to the entire dialogue.
Do it.
hahahahahaha!
That last line really made me smile
