Long week

August 13, 2010 |  Category:   life

It’s been a long week. Emotional too. I’ve been cramming all kinds of work into the last 12 days so that I don’t have to bring it with me, but it looks I might have to. It’s ironic that most of my summer has been fairly work free EXCEPT for the 2 weeks leading up to vacation. Now we’re suddenly dealing with stress and deadlines, scrambling to pack and get everyone’s hair cut, and having work bleed into the only vacation that we’ll get this year. Why universe, why??

It feels like we’re closing in on the end of summer. Today’s cooler weather is certainly a sign of change and the day light hours are too – it’s almost completely dark by 8:15 pm. It used to be that the sun was still out when the girls went to bed, but now it’s dark and they’ve been noticing the change. I don’t know if this is the reason why they’ve been willing to go to sleep earlier, but it can’t be a total coincidence.

When we get back, it will be September and we’ll really start to test the workings of our new schedule: new kitchen arrangements during the busy season, preschool 4 days a week for Claudine for the first time, 1st grade for Mia, and no more nanny. I’m a bit nervous. The overnight shift for Mark on Thursday early mornings (or is it Wednesday late night?) have been brutal. Because of the way things have gone, he’ll be up for 21 straight hours, waking up at 2am and going to bed at 11pm the next day, with much of those hours doing double shifts in the kitchen. It might be fine for 1 day a week, but we’ll be ramping up to the holidays in no time and we’re not sure yet how it’ll all pan out. There might be a lot of praying and cursing in our future, but we’re thankful that we have worked things out so far. So many things to be thankful for.

BUT…all that stuff is for later. For now, we are packing, working, getting ready to spend a weekend at my parents’ house and taking one last trip to the beach, most likely our last of the summer. Vacation is for taking a break and recharging, right?

We definitely need a break from our life. Hope you all have a great weekend.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend and an amazing vacation! Gotta tell you that I could relate to the post about music a little while back. I was a total headbanger in junior high/high school and had great seats for Judas Priest in grade ten. It seemed like we were pushing the limits at the time, little did we know, we were far from it. I kind of wish I’d hung on to the spandex just to have a good laugh.
