Remember this post from the summer? We were supposed to be leaving for that trip this weekend, but I cancelled it last week. It was a bit impulsive at the time of booking in the early summer, but we were presented with the opportunity to stay in a resort in the Bahamas for basically free through a friend, so it seemed like something we couldn’t pass up, particularly since I’ve been dreaming of taking the family on a Caribbean vacation for the longest time. A tropical vacation is one of those things we always envy whenever friends and neighbors go away, but I never think we could swing it. I guess it will remain elusive to us. Oh, but we were so so close! Look, I have to laugh at the timing of this and the irony of it all after having finally pulled the trigger on airplane tickets, but it’s not the right time to go. We are still so behind on the business and well, it just seems so weird to go away when there is still so much recovery going on around the city from the hurricane. Mia is terribly disappointed that we’re not going, but we’ll take the loss on the plane tickets and hey, at least we got the girls passports!
Another thing that Sandy messed with is my grandmother’s 90th birthday party. It was supposed to be that weekend, but it too was cancelled in light of the storm and the fact that many of us didn’t have enough gas to drive to Queens. Plus grandma got sick during the storm (but she is feeling better now). Happy 90th birthday grandma!
I’m looking out my window right now and I see teenage boys playing soccer without their shirts on because it’s something like 65 degrees outside (yes, we did have snow on the ground last week). My parents finally regained power in their house yesterday 2 weeks after the storm. Thanksgiving is next week, the holiday markets in NYC are opening this week and we’re headed full on into the holidays (have you spotted the Christmas commercials on TV yet?). Life goes on for some, but still not for others. Let’s not forget them.
PS, 2 more articles on Occupy Sandy, which continue to impress and inspire.
