It’s Mia’s birthday week. As it’s also near Valentine’s Day, trying to plan any kind of celebration is stressful, so we’ve opted for small home parties every year alternating between different groups of friends on the invite. This year we wanted to have our neighbors and their kids over for brunch.

All Mia wanted for her birthday is a pinata. She’s been talking about it for a year, so when we went on a recent shopping trip to Target, she fixated on a purple pony pinata and clung to its neck the whole time in the store. Ok, that’s not actually how it went down. Claudine and Mia fought over who got to hold the purple pony so *I* had to carry that thing around the store. More fighting at home ensued so the purple pony sat high out of reach on our dresser in our room. The thing scared the crap out of me sometimes in the mornings when I’d forget it was there.

On the eve of the brunch we dumped all the Valentine’s themed candy, plastic gemstone rings, heart stickers and little bottles of nail polish on the floor and stuffed that pony silly. Turns out the pony didn’t really have such big capacity to hold a lot of stuff, but we did our best and left it by the window till morning. The cat came over and sniffed it.

Tuesday is my Double Sweet Sixteen and I’m celebrating with a day in the store with rollerskates, the fluffiest dress I’ve ever worn, mounds of pink cake with sparkle rings like Mia’s, pink pom decorations, a fringed 1.5 ft party hat, and bottles and bottles of champagne. Party go-ers will be treated with hats, star shaped metallic glasses, and blow-out horns. I could not be more excited. If only I had access to that purple pony or if the weather would hold out for a bouncehouse, I’d be extra festive. I’m ready though…and am happy to share my birthday season with such a cool kiddo.

oh it’s adorable the image of your cat sniffing the poney. and little mia getting big. the photographs are amazing, congratulations. *

p.s i’m always remembering to ask you this, were you able to keep your cat while you were pregnant? in portugal the doctors don’t like the idea so much… i’m trying to understand why…

We are big fans of pinatas around here. In fact, Amelia was looking over my shoulder as I read this post and she ooh-and-ahhed over the pony. I feel compelled to give you a head’s up that nailpolish is NOT a great pinata item. We find a lot of the goods inside take quite a beating during the pinata-fest before crashing to the ground. Your house is beautiful and to keep it that way, it might be a better party favor item.

hee hee – so darling. i sort of like pinatas but then it can get a little bit scary when you see all the tiny children beating the hell out of the poor animal-shaped thing. the last one we had was over a year ago, and my friend made it in the shape of a troll so we wouldn’t all feel so bad.

i have said it before but gosh those girls are beauties.

Jenna, your girls are absolutely precious! My daughter is almost three and I am wondering where you purchase all the adorable outfits Mia and Claudine are photographed in. I live in the NYC area and would love it if you could reveal your favorite shops for kids’ clothes.

Schuyler, thanks. check out the FAQ (look in the left column under about). I actually answer this question there!
