the class comforter

November 22, 2011 |  Category:   life

It’s not uncommon in grade school for each student to be assigned a class job that rotates every week, but some of the jobs in Claudine’s kindergarten class have been a bit unusual. See her up there at a recent field trip to the park to sketch some trees? She’s the “class comforter”. What’s that you ask? She comforts her fellow classmates when they need comforting, of course. When I asked her what the job entailed she told me,”well, I take care of them if they are crying or sad and pat them on the back and say ‘it’s ok’.”
Damn. I think we all could use a class comforter by our side right about now.

THAT is a great idea. I love how matter-of-fact Claudine is about it. I mean, if someone needs comfort, you pat them on the back tell them “its ok”, right? Its what you do. A+ to Claudines teacher.

That is AWESOME. Props to that teacher! I love drawing clear lines like that. We have similar titles for class jobs but my favourite token phrase is, “Do you want to be helpful or hurtful?”. It’s amazing how much that encompasses.

  • michelle November 22, 2011 at 10:20 am

Ugh, that it is so sweet.

Awww…In my daughter’s Junior Kindergarten class, they rotate everyday being the “weather bear dresser”. They dress the weather bear according to the weather outside. And of course, being from Toronto, Canada, weather bear MUST always be dressed in layers to keep him warm 🙂

The “class comforter” is such a good idea. It teaches kids to be nurturing and caring…a good start for school children, especially with bullying so rampant now. Bravo to C and her school!

  • Atsuko November 22, 2011 at 11:26 am

What a clever class job! I should have established it in my classroom. It is such a comfort to know and feel when someone says, “It’s OK.” It is a simple phrase but brings warmth and relieve at the same time. Also, this jobs seems to teach children about a helping hand. Lovely.

  • gia November 22, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Wow, that is so great. I just hit my 30’s and realized I really want to take care of people and be an occupational therapist. Maybe she will do something like that.. I think sensitive people fit those roles. It makes our sensitivity a positive thing.

  • Bloomer November 22, 2011 at 1:42 pm

I love it! In my kids’ preschool one of the jobs the kids can pick is the class ‘high-fiver’ who stands at the door whenever the kids leave the classroom and high-fives everyone.

  • Claire November 22, 2011 at 7:26 pm

mental note for my class next year. I’m not sure kids above 2nd grade would buy it though…
