Feel like such the absent parent these last few weeks aside from walking the kids to and from school, but it’s October! And there are fun Fall things happening everywhere! So I made the time to go pumpkin picking on Sunday because that’s what parents do, and I was happy to be outside for a change. It seems like everyone else in America decided to go pumpkin picking this weekend too. The sun, when it wasn’t hiding behind clouds, was glorious and the contrast between the bright orange pumpkins and the green grass was almost too much to take in. I sat in the sun as the girls waited in line to jump inside a big blowup bouncy pumpkin (I think it’s kind of hilarious how kids immediately gravitate towards bouncy castles, ready to jump around like crazy people at the drop of a hat) and I watched a mom with her 6 month old baby all decked out in Halloween attire. I tried to remember the girls at that age. I almost couldn’t; the memories of those days are fading away. I thought about the boy in our neighborhood who got hit by a car recently and didn’t survive. I tried to push away thoughts of how I would feel if it had happened to us because really, aren’t accidents like that just arbitrary and random? Mostly I just zoned out and tried not to think about all the stuff I had to do before Monday morning, watching families walk by carrying pumpkins and loading up their wagons with mums and gourds. Fall weekends seem to pass by too fast before the weather turns cold and it gets a tad too uncomfortable to spend outside. Enjoy them before they are gone.
