stuff from the farmers market

August 8, 2010 |  Category:   happy purchases seasonal

The farmers markets around the city are starting to become amazing…more stuff available and it’s only going to get better from here on out. Although these were bought from the Union Square Farmers Market in Manhattan, we are pretty lucky that the one across the street from our house is getting better and bigger each year. This is what Mark brought home: heirloom tomatoes, sorrel (my fave), artichokes, dinosaur plums (not pictured) and squash flower blossoms. We’ll post how we ate them tomorrow.

What are you buying from your local farmers markets?

We went to the farmer’s market in Beacon today, but unfortunately we had already done our weekly grocery shopping as we hadn’t anticipated going over there this weekend.

We wound up buying a pint of homemade hot & spicy pickles — heading into the kitchen now to try one.

We go to the Santa Monica farmer’s market on Saturdays. Lately we’ve been getting little orange tomatos, plums, white nectarines, gaviota strawberries, and watermelon. Love the fruits of summer!

I love seeing pictures of what people are buying at other farmer’s markets! I can’t keep myself away from all the berries, peaches, and cherries. Sadly, the raspberries in my backyard haven’t been cooperating yet.. get with it, darn Seattle weather!

I also made a lovely pizza last week with arugula and tomatoes from the market. Delicious!

Went to the farmer’s market in Pacific Palisades today! Bought quite the mismash of goodies: kettle corn, blueberries, grapes, raspberries, strawberries, 5 different kinds of pluots (never knew there were so many) and chocolate chip banana bread (which I’m enjoying right now)!

I love this time of year!
Best things at markets in the uk at the moment are little summer squashes (pattypan!), raspberries, victoria plums and rainbow chard.

We don’t see blossoms here very often but I’ve had some from my courgette plant.

Summer squash, fresh shelled peas, pastured eggs, any berries I can get my hands on, the best nectarines and peaches ever, and I just got some fresh baby corn the other day.

Here is mid-coast Maine we are enjoying local tomatoes, arugula, basil, green beans, incredible sweet corn, wild blueberries. The first hard sour apples arrived last weekend, and the wild mushroom seller is stocked with everything from Crimini to Chicken of the Woods (yum). Our market also has locally made cheese, bread, organic beef/chicken/pork, yarn, ginger cakes, coffee: I could go on…..
