the scent of summer

June 28, 2011 |  Category:   life outings seasonal

Seems like nothing signals summer better than berry picking. And it hits you, the heavy sweet scent of strawberries as soon as you get out of the car. Claudine is always more interested in picking flowers than she is fruit and our baskets always inevitably get littered with small blossoms and the random wildflower or weed, you know, “for decoration”. These strawberries went into a strawberry rhubarb pie that we brought to a school picnic the next day. Speaking of, today is the official last day of school for NYC public schools. If last year was any indication, Mia will come home awash in mixed emotions. Seems like she takes after me.

I would love to take our boys berry picking when they are a bit older. Looks like such a wonderful thing to do together as a family. It’s pretty cold here in Sydney at the moment but looking at your photos and reading your posts make it almost possible for me to smell that wonderful scent of summer. I used to get pretty emotional when school finished up as well. I hope you get to do lovely things together during the holidays.

Your posts often bring me a strange feeling that reminds me of my childhood, which gives me (for the moment I am reading your post at least) a great sense of enchantment. You do such a good job of showing an earnest but whimsical side of your family, as well as the more nitty gritty. I always look forward to your posts. I just really thought I ought to share.

one of my earliest memories is of strawberry picking with my mother. I remember the white dress and the white sandals being clean getting out of the car, and covered with strawberry stains & mud when we were finished. Pure summer…

I remember picking strawberries when I was 7 in Australia. I didn’t quite grasp the concept and kept putting them in my mouth. My mum was yelling at me to quit it πŸ™‚ There’s strawberry fields near where I live now and I think I might just take the hubs strawberry picking, weather permitting.

Claudines jumper is so darn cute! I love the first photo. Looks a lot like what Lancaster County, PA! πŸ™‚ and that pie must have been very very delicious. Strawberry & rhubarb are one of my most favourite combinations!

My daughter always comes home from the last day with mixed emotions too. They actually allow the kids to come home at noon if they want too but my daughter always stays until 3pm with her teacher. πŸ™‚
