Cheesecake with a Blackberry Lavender Sauce

Cheesecake with a Blackberry Lavender Sauce

Mark recently remarked to me that I was lucky because sometimes I can wish for cake and it will magically appear the next day. If I’m really lucky, he’ll whip one up in a few hours. I know not everyone is a cake person, but if you are, there’s something about a cake craving that can be so intense that nothing else – not ice cream, or a pastry, or even a cupcake – can satiate it. It’s true that these cravings often come when I’m super stressed (and can I tell you right now that my stress level is through the roof this month?), but that fragrant smell of cake baking in the oven is so comforting. While it… CONTINUE READING

Another Thanksgiving has come and gone. It really is my favorite holiday since it is the most food-centric of them all. Still, I have not yet cooked a real Thanksgiving meal myself in many years and this year was no different. I felt I needed to make some kind of a contribution in the kitchen so I made my pumpkin pie and also some braised red cabbage and roasted mushrooms. A few days ago I saw these absolutely perfect quince at a farmer’s market. For those of you who don’t know, quince is my favorite Fall fruit which is saying a lot as Fall also brings persimmons, pomegranates and kumquats. The only downside to them is that they need just… CONTINUE READING

cupcakes, in color

cupcakes, in color

July 22, 2008 |  Category:   baked goods + desserts the biz

These cupcakes might come as a surprise to anyone who knows my general color preference (I mean, my favorite color is gray), but I do love a spot of bright color. Who knew that I would love this assorted arrangement of technicolor cupcakes that Mark made for a birthday party over the weekend? The wrappers totally complete the package, but our seven year old client requested chocolate cupcakes with bright colored frosting. Thanks for the inspiration!… CONTINUE READING

a simple cake

July 3, 2008 |  Category:   baked goods + desserts life

We made this small, 9″ chocolate cake for a friend last night and decided to leave most of the surface undecorated except for a shell border at the base. We really liked how smooth the cake looked. This morning I snipped a few purple johnny jump-ups (which are edible by the way) from our balcony for simple adornment. Mark’s been telling me that I’ve been eating a lot of buttercream lately. Um, thanks, Captain Obvious, but what else are we going to do with leftover buttercream? Thanks for all your comments to the last post. I feel better today (actually, I don’t really feel like such a great mom today, but that’s a whole ‘nother long post). I think part… CONTINUE READING

the wedding cake

the wedding cake

June 30, 2008 |  Category:   baked goods + desserts the biz

The wedding cake was delivered today, assembled on site, and probably long gone by now. Even though Mark has done a handful of simple wedding cakes during his time as pastry chef, this was the first one we did together. Can’t say it was free of minor disagreements and bickering, but I suppose that goes with the territory when you’re in business with your spouse. I think we’re pretty happy with the way it came together, though of course you always want the buttercream to be smoother and the bead borders to be more perfect, but all in all, the cake looked like, well, a wedding cake. We just hoped it survived the trip from restaurant refrigerator, up a steep… CONTINUE READING

a big birthday cake

a big birthday cake

May 4, 2008 |  Category:   baked goods + desserts

Along with my usual kitchen production this week I had a special request. Mia’s friend had his fourth birthday party over the weekend and I was asked to make the cake. It’s been a while since I have made a cake of this size, meant to serve up to 100 people. In restaurants I used to make cakes twice the size for all sorts of parties, but in a home kitchen it’s certainly a different story. The main issue is refrigerator space, which is always short in my house, and trying to fit in a half-sheet cake was quite a challenge. The actual cooking, filling and frosting is more manageable, even with two kids tugging at my legs begging for… CONTINUE READING
