Our fascination with the Gold Coast Mansions of Long Island continues and we found a new one to visit last weekend at Sands Point, which is the home to the Guggenheim Estate. There are walking trails and acres of grass to set up a picnic, and access to a quiet beach which hands down sealed the deal when we were thinking of places to go on that sunny Saturday. We had space to run, think and enjoy the view; pretty much the perfect place to spend a day.   And you know what I did? Read. Not on my phone, not on the computer, but an actual book. Sadly, I can’t remember the last time I read a book uninterrupted… CONTINUE READING

Do you know about the Gold Coast Mansions on the North Shore of Long Island? If you’ve read the Great Gatsby, then you do. Yes, the Gilded Age, where new fortunes were made in steel and other industries. These were the lavish homes of some of the wealthiest American families like the Astors, Whitneys, Guggenheims and Vanderbilts. At one point there were over 500 mansions built along this 16 mile stretch, but less than half survived; only a handful are open to the public.   We’ve been to 2 of these mansions located near my parents’ house a number of times – Old Westbury Gardens (where the family threw me the best birthday surprise) and The Nassau County Museum of… CONTINUE READING

Sometimes I wonder if this blog has run its course. I’m not planning on shutting it down, though I must admit if it weren’t for our business, I do think that I would at least consider it. But aside from that, writing and taking photos and connecting with people still give me joy, but I will fully admit that these days, I struggle a bit to find something to write about every day. This has always been a personal blog and in that sense I never needed to search for content – it always came from whatever I was feeling and doing at the moment, but in the last few months I’ve been wanting to close that door a little… CONTINUE READING

It looks like Alice plays here, doesn’t it? You may remember the first time we took the girls to Old Westbury Gardens. It was on my birthday last year, but it was still chilly and the leaves and flowers hadn’t bloomed yet. What a difference a month makes (although everything is at least 2 weeks earlier this year due to the warm winter and spring weather). We spent Mother’s Day morning here. It’s the perfect place to wander around and let the kids role play all their fantasy games. It’s like the Secret Garden. Magical.… CONTINUE READING

I had a really good birthday this weekend. Never mind that I was sort of struck by how old I was in a way that I wasn’t last year (I’ll get to that in a different post), but I spent it with lunches and dinners out with friends starting mid-week last week, including a spontaneous visit with my old, half-Asian rapper friend, Pete, on Saturday. Felt like old times when we were hanging out all the time and meeting each other up last minute and walking all over the city. That evening, Saturday, I went to bed before midnight for the first time in many months and slept almost 9 hours. Sunday morning, the storm from the previous night cleared,… CONTINUE READING
