As a first generation immigrant, this administration’s handling of the border crises is the issue on top of many issues during this presidency that feels like a punch in the gut. The separation of families should be a non-partisan issue because it’s a cruel policy. I know it’s not the same situation at all, but I can’t help but think about how I was separated from my mother for 2 years when I was a baby because she decided to take advantage of an opportunity to come to America. I wrote a bit about the story here last year when my grandmother passed away. While I can’t relate to what unimaginable stress these separated families—and particularly the children—are going through right now, I can speak to the trauma of being separated and the long-lasting psychological effects it has. I hope to march in NYC this Saturday, but we’ll also be donating 30% of all sales from our shop this week to RAICES Family Reunification and Bond Fund.
